Not so painful

Posted in general, internets at 5:39 pm by Sarah

So it’s been a while in coming but I’ve finally updated my version of Wordpress. Yes, I’ve been putting it off all this time because I couldn’t be arsed but it was surprisingly a lot less painful than I was expecting.

The new Admin screens are interesting. They may take a little getting used to (just where stuff is) but it looks like it’ll be more user friendly in the long run.

Nothing new to report - it’s been a very quiet weekend which isn’t a bad thing as I’ve been feeling a bit off. Hopefully it will pass before tomorrow when it’s back to work!

Am I… just not getting it?

Posted in internets, technogeekery at 7:29 pm by Sarah

Back when I first started running websites (before I ever had my own webspace and domains) the task was always to find free webhost services with NO ADS.

Eventually that became impossible so rather cave to having yucky ads on my site I bought my own webspace.

So, why do I see SO MANY fansites out there that have those friggin’ Google Ads or any OTHER kind of ads on them? I mean… what? Granted, if it’s a popular website the bandwidth could be hefty. But here’s the thing.

One of my webhosts is DreamHost. I pay around $10/mth (which could be cheaper if I signed up for a longer contract but I digress…). I GET OVER 6 TERABYTE A MONTH. That’s, roughly, 6000 GB. AND it increases by 40GB weekly!

Surely a fandom website (blog, forum, gallery, whatever) isn’t going to use more than that? When there are so many webhosts out there offering ridiculous amounts of space & bandwidth for such a low price, why are the ads present? I could understand if they were trying to offset the cost of webhosting but $10 is… well, less than 3 cups of coffee out here! :P

WTF?!

Posted in internets, real life at 6:11 pm by Sarah

We’re getting house calls now?!

Okay, so it doesn’t sound like it’s Telstra but STILL. Same freaking questions!

“Do you have the internet connected? How much are you paying? What do you get for that?” etc etc etc.

ETA: Whoops. I just went down and gave the guy a serve. When Mum tried to explain what we get in our package, he sounded like he didn’t believe that we DO actually get 80GB combined (I swear, he actually said “Oh, I don’t think so, ma’am.” WTH. It’s OUR internet. I’m pretty sure we know). So I laid it out. 80GB/mth. 40GB peak. 40GB offpeak. Phone included. And VOIP. NOT. INTERESTED. IN OTHER. COMPANIES.

Mum said that I was pushing the line on rudeness but I’m just so sick of door-to-door people and phone/internet companies calling at all hours. Grargh. There isn’t a ‘Do Not Call’ register for door-to-door people, is there?

I’m so weak…

Posted in internets at 8:17 pm by Sarah

I’ve caved to the peer pressure!

I have a Facebook account.

Don’t look at me like that! I resisted MySpace all this time… I knew it was only a matter of time before I caved to The Next Big Fad. :P

So any friends/family who are reading my blog who haven’t got a Facebook account, go join! Yes, if I’m going down I’m taking all of you with me!

In its defence, it’s a great networking tool. It’s amazing how many people from school I’ve managed to find since joining up. *trips down Memory Lane*

I thought yesterday’s Dilbert was the greatest thing ever, what with the spreadsheet reference and all (okay, ours is a database, but anyway)…

Until I read today’s strip. Then I decided THAT was definitely the greatest (and funniest!) thing ever. Seriously, second panel? Oh. Em. Gee. :rotflmao:

Google helps save energy

Posted in internets, technogeekery at 7:07 pm by Sarah

Sent this in an email from Mum today. My inner geek thought this was awesome. :D

For those worried with energy consumption and all its downsides. When your screen is white, being it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with a lower energy consumption, check it out.

Oh Telstra. You amuse me.

Posted in amusing, internets at 3:40 pm by Sarah

We get these periodic calls from The Devil Telstra, asking if we’d like to change our phone and/or internet back to them. Today we received one such call. (Paraphrased)

Mum: We’re actually with iiNet. It’s cheaper for us.
Telstra: Maybe we can offer you a better deal.
Mum: I really don’t think you can…
Telstra: What are you getting from iiNet? I suppose it’s mostly internet.
Mum: It’s actually both phone and internet.
Telstra: What kind of downloads are you getting from them?
Mum: *calls out to me* What do we get a month?
Me: *laughing* 80 Gig.
Mum: *to Telstra* We get 80 Gigabytes a month.
Telstra: *silence for a moment* Yeah, um, I’ll just leave you with that.

Hee! They keep calling but I don’t see them EVER being able to beat what we’re currently getting. LOL
